J&K Lieutenant Governor GC Murmu Resigns

Share

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu on Wednesday tendered his resignation after nine months as the head of administration of the Union Territory. However there was no official word on the development till late on Wednesday.

While reports said Murmu has sent his resignation to Presdent Ram Nath Kovind, there was no confirmation whether it has been accepted or rejected.

Murmu was appointed as the first L-G of Jammu and Kashmir last October after the formation of the new Union Territory under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.

His resignation came on the day the ruling BJP commemorated the first anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution, which scrapped Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and divided it into two Union Territories.

Earlier on Wednesday, Army commander of Northern Command had called on Murmu and discussed the overall security management of the Union Territory.

Murmu is a 1985 batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Gujarat cadre. He also served as the principal secretary to PM Narendra Modi during his tenure as the chief minister of Gujarat.
