Srinagar: Police on Tuesday claimed to have killed two militants responsible for shootout in south Kashmir’s Bijbehara town in which a CRPF personal and minor were killed.
Special operations group (SOG) of police, army’s 3RR and CRPF laid a cordon around Waghama in Anantnag on Tuesday morning on a specific input regarding the presence of militants in the village, a police spokesperson said. The state forces gave surrender offer to the holed up militants when their presence in the village was ascertained.
“However they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, 2 unidentified militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the spot,” the police spokesperson said.
The police spokesperson said that the identity of the militants was being ascertained.
However, quoting IGP Kashmir, the police spokesperson said that the duo and another militant Zahid were involved in killing of a policeman last year and killings of two CRPF personnel and a minor boy recently.
“Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other crimes,” the police spokesperson said.
The bodies, he said have been sent to Handwara for their last rites after conducting medico-legal formalities including collection of their DNA.
“In case any family claims the killed militants to be their kith or kin, they can come forward for their identification and participation in last rites at Handwara,” the police spokesperson said.
“In this connection a case under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station Bijbehara and investigation has been initiated,” he added.
Pertinently, this was second encounter in Anantnag district in less than 24 hours. Three militants were killed in the gun battle with state forces at Khulchohar area of the district on Monday.
