Covid-19 Death Toll Crosses 100 Mark In J&K As 5 More Succumb

Srinagar: Coronavirus related deaths crossed 100 mark in Jammu and Kashmir as five more people on Tuesday died of Covid-19, taking the total number of fatalities across the Union Territory to 101.

Among the fresh fatalities, four were reported from Kashmir Valley while one was from Jammu division’s Kathua district.

Two of the deaths in Valley took place in CD hospital here—one of them a 23-year-old youth from Shopian and another, a 65-year-old woman, from Baghat Barzulla.

Medical Superintendent CD hospital, one of the exclusive facilities for the management of Covid-19 patients said that the 23-year-old youth was shifted from SHMS hospital yesterday.

“He was having head injury was in serious condition,” he said, adding, “The 65-year-old woman from Baghat Barzulla was on ventilator. She was hypertensive, diabetic and had other ailments.”

A 65-year-old man from Qamarwari area of Srinagar also tested positive for the novel coronavirus, hours after his death at the SMHS hospital here. He was admitted to the SMHS hospital’s isolation ward on Monday and was suffering from bilateral pneumonia.

“He complained chest related problem and his oxygen level was low as such we took him to SMHS hospital on Monday afternoon. He was admitted to isolation ward and died at 9:30 a.m. today,” the deceased’s son said.

Earlier, an 85-year-old woman from Basohli area of the Kathua district died at GMC Jammu.

The octogenarian was the first covid-19 victim in the district.

“She was suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and was on oxygen since admission.  She died at 7.30 a.m. today,” said Dr. Nasib Chand Digra, Principal Dean Government Medical College Jammu.

With history of travel, she was admitted to the JMC on June 25 and was on oxygen support since, a senior doctor of the hospital said.

Later in the day, a 55-year-old covid-19 positive patient from Baramulla district died at a hospital here.

A resident of Dewan Bagh Baramulla, the 55-year-old businessman was admitted to SKIMS Bemina on June 27, said hospital’s Medical Superintendent Dr Shifa Deva. “He was suffering from pneumonia,” she said.

With five more fatalities, the death toll in J&K due to COVID-19 has reached 101 — 89 in Valley and 12 in Jammu division.

Srinagar, with 24 deaths tops the list of Covid-19 fatalities followed by 16 in Baramulla, 13 in Kulgam, 12 in Shopian, seven each in Budgam, Anantnag & Jammu, five in Kupwara, four in Pulwama and one each in Bandipora, Udhampur, Doda, Kathua, Poonch and Rajouri districts.  (with GNS inputs)
