TEHRAN: Iran has issued an arrest warrant for US President Donald Trump and 35 others over the killing of top general Qassem Soleimani and has asked Interpol for help, an Iranian prosecutor announced on Monday, according to the Fars news agency.

The United States killed Maj General Soleimani, leader of the Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force, with a drone strike at Baghdad airport in the Iraqi capital on January 3.

Soleimani was on an official visit to Iraq when he was assassinated along with Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy head of Iraq’s Hashd al-Sha’abi paramilitary force by targeting their vehicles outside Baghdad International Airport on January 3. Washington accused Iranian general of masterminding attacks by Iranian-aligned militias on US forces in the region.

“Thirty-six people who were involved in the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani have  been identified, including political and military officials from the United States and other governments,” Tehran Prosecutor Ali Alqasi-Mehr said.

He added that Iran’s Judiciary has issued arrest warrants and requested “Red Notices” to be put out for them by Interpol.

Under a red notice, local authorities make the arrests on behalf of the country that requested it. The notices cannot force countries to arrest or extradite suspects, but can put government leaders on the spot and limit suspects’ travel.

The Iranian judicial official emphasized that these individuals would face charges of “murder and act of terror,” saying that Iran would continue to pursue Trump’s prosecution even after his presidency ends.

“At the top of the list is US President Donald Trump, and his prosecution will be pursued even after the end of his term in office,” the Iranian judge said.

Alqasimehr said the group included other US military and civilian officials but did not provide further details.

The killing of Soleimani brought the United States and Iran to the brink of armed conflict after Iran retaliated by firing missiles at American targets in Iraq several days later.
