‘Staying Here Is No Less Than Suicide’

Srinagar: Kashmiri students stranded in coronavirus hit Maharashtra on Wednesday urged government to quickly evacuate them saying that a prolonged stay in the state was ‘no less than a suicide’.
A group of students told Kashmir Observer that they are stranded in Pune city of Maharashtra since the first lockdown was announced last month by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They said the state is leading in the numbers of Covid-19 cases and the statistics were alarming and giving them sleepless nights.
“In this grim situation, I am facing a lot of hurdles. My family is very distressed because I am stranded in a red zone. My parents are extremely worried,” Yawar Khan, a student said.
“Because of the current uncertainties, I am struggling with grave anxiety and stress. I want to return home as soon as possible because I am alone, helpless and scared,” he said.
Demanding quick evacuation, Yawar urged Jammu and Kashmir administration to take a clue from the Punjab and Uttar Pradesh governments, who evacuated their stranded residents from other states amid the lockdown.
“We do not fear being quarantined once we land in Kashmir, but staying here is no less than suicide,” he added.
