Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Tuesday quashed detention of 41 people booked under the controversial Public Safety Act (PSA), paving way for their release from different jails of north India’s Uttar Pradesh.
The decision about quashing PSA of the 41 prisoners was taken this morning by the J&K administration, new agency KNO reported. All the 41 are languishing in different jails of Uttar Pradesh.
The Public Safety Act (PSA) is an administrative detention law that allows detention of any individual for up to two years without a trial or charge. The Act that allows for the arrest and detention of people without a warrant, specific charges, and often for an unspecified period of time has been in vogue in Kashmir since 1978.
The law was introduced by the then Chief Minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah in 1978 to book timber smugglers but later on it was rampantly used against political opponents and activists seeking Kashmir settlement. Amnesty International has termed it a “lawless law”.
According to the news agency, PSA detention orders of 140 people have been .revoked by the government in a month. On Monday, the government had quashed PSA of 36 persons languishing in different jails of J&K.
After abrogation of Article 370 by BJP-led Central government, nearly 5000 persons were arrested in Kashmir to scuttle protests against the move of them, many were shifted outside J&K and lodged in eight jails of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana
