SRINAGAR – Kashmir Valley is bracing up for another wet spell from Saturday, even as intense cold wave persisted on Friday, with Pahalgam recording its night temperature at minus 14.3 degrees Celsius, weather department official said.
The official said a fresh Western Disturbance (WD), which originated from the Arabian Sea and is approaching the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan, will hit the region on Saturday.
“Due to the system created because of the WD, heavy snow would occur at isolated to some places on Saturday and Sunday,” he said.
He said during this time fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate snow would occur in the valley, resulting in dip in the maximum temperature.
The official said that weather will remain dry during the next 24 hours in Kashmir valley.
In the summer capital Srinagar, there was some respite from chilly weather conditions during the night as the mercury surged about a degree and settled at minus 1.9 degree. However, people woke up to a chilly Friday morning due to overcast conditions though as the day progressed sun came out, resulting some improvement in the maximum temperature.
The mercury at Kupwara in north Kashmir, tourist resort of Kokernag and Qazigund, gateway to the valley, settled at minus 6.1 degree, minus 4.2 degree and minus 3.2 degree, respectively.
Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, witnessed further dip due to open skies in the night temperature, which settled at minus 14.3 degree, against 13.7 degree recorded on Thursday.
The night temperature at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, where ski slopes are covered under several feet of snow, witnessed slight improved and settled minus 13 degree. Sun played hide and seek though ice cold winds continued in Gulmarg, where tourists, including adventure lovers, were out on the ski slopes enjoying different snow related activities.
All the waterbodies are frozen in Drass, the second coldest place in the word, and other areas in Ladakh region, where the mercury continued to remain several degrees below freezing point. Drass was the coldest place in the region after the night temperature dipped further 4 degree from Thursday and settled at minus 31 degrees. The night temperature at Leh plunged about 10 degrees from Thursday and settled at minus 20.2 degree.
People in most parts of Ladakh region are dependent on hot springs for water as the supply through pipes remains suspended during the winter following sub-zero temperature.
