SRINAGAR – In a significant development, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is mulling to set up a state-of-art training centre for Jammu and Kashmir police personnel in a bid to ensure high level training for the cops on their home turf.

The project has been cleared in principle by the MHA and now a high level panel will complete the formalities that include identifying location for setting up the centre in J&K Union Territory (UT), MHA sources revealed.

Sources disclosed that the training centre will be laced with trained staff that will impart quality training to J&K cops that includes commando training, using latest weaponry, modern means of crowd control, anti-sabotage, anti-hijacking, tackling e-crimes, forensic training and fast track investigations mechanism etc.

“The primary focus will be on imparting quality commando training to the J&K cops given the fact that the force is on the fore front of facing multiple challenges including militancy,” sources said.

They said that project cost will be finalized once the location for the centre would be finalized.

“It is more likely that the centre will come up in Kashmir region of J&K UT. The project will be funded by MHA under police modernization plan,” sources said.

A senior police official said that at present the force keeps on sending police men in different and short batches to out of J&K UT for specialized training on various subjects.

“It has been a long wait to see J&K cops being given commando training on their home turf. Experts who would impart training will be coming from various states of country and also from foreign countries,” he said.

He said the new recruits will be provided commando training in small batches in the initial phase and once the centre would be fully functional, the number of training batches will increase accordingly.

The MHA has constituted a panel to complete the formalities regarding the project and it was expected that the identification of location and land would be completed by March end this year. (KNO)
