Violent Protests In Nowgam After Police Vehicle Crushes Student

SRINAGAR – At least three people were injured on Tuesday in violent pro­tests that broke out in Nowgam area of the city outskirts after a teenager was killed in a road accident.

An over-speeding police vehicle first hit a private vehicle before crushing to death a teenager matric student and injuring a woman in Nowgam area of the city outskirts this morn­ing, reports said. While the teenager reportedly died on the spot, the injured woman identified as Haleema was removed to the hospital for treat­ment.

The slain student has been identified as Teh­seen Nazir, son of Nazir Ahmed of Bonpor, Now­gam. Reports said Nazir was going for tuitions when the speedy vehicle mowed him down.

The death of the teenager, reports said led to a spontaneous shutdown and set-off massive pro­tests in the area. Groups of youth chanting slogans hit the streets at Nowgam and pelted rocks on the government forces. The government forces, reports said fired several shots in air after failing to disperse the protesters with baton charge and teargas canisters.

At least two people sustained injuries during the clashes that continued for several hours. Both the injured were removed to Bone and Joints Hos­pital Srinagar for treatment.

Meanwhile, a police spokesman in a statement issued here said that a traffic mishap occurred at Nowgam area in the outskirts of Srinagar resulting in injuries to two persons.

“The road traffic accident happened when two vehicles one of which belonged to Armed Police collided and consequently two persons sustained injuries.

“The injured persons were shifted to hospital for the treatment of injuries however one of the injured persons identified as Tehseen Nazir of Nowgam succumbed while the other injured per­son continues to receive treatment at the hospital and is stated to be stable,” the police spokesman said.

He said that police have registered a case FIR No: 03/2019 under relevant sections of law in this regard. “Driver of the police vehicle has been ar­rested. Further investigation in the matter is in progress,” the police spokesman said.
