Teen Militant Killed In Awantipora Gunfight

SRINAGAR – A teenage militant of Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit was killed on Tuesday in a gunfight with government forces in Awantipora area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

According to reports, army, special operations group (SOG) of police and CRPF laid a cordon around Sail village in Awantipora after receiving inputs about the presence of a week-old militant Shahid Nazir of Arwani in the area. The government forces, reports said made announcements through public address system asking the lone militant to surrender. Nazir’s family were also brought to the spot by police to persuade him from laying down his arms.

However, paying no heed to the surrender offer, the teen militant opened a volley of gunfire at the joint team in a bid to escape from their dragnet.

“The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, the militant was killed and his body was retrieved from the site,” a police spokesperson said.

He said that incriminating material including arms & ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter

“People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials if any,” the spokesperson added.

Meanwhile, the killing of the Hizb militant set off protest in the area. According to a local newsgathering agency CNS, youth appeared on Srinagar-Jammu highway and staged a protest against the militant’s killing.

The government forces successfully chased them and foiled their attempt to organize protests and prevented the situation from getting out of hands.

VDC Man Held For Selling Rifle To Militant

A Village Defence Committee (VDC) member was arrested for allegedly selling a weapon to a Hizbul Mujahideen militant in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, officials said on Tuesday.

VDC member Devi Dass was arrested after a case was registered against him for selling the weapon and ammunition to Hizbul militant Tariq Hussain Wani in Kishtwar, a senior police officer said.

Tariq’s interrogation had revealed that he had purchased the weapon from Dass and joined militancy in Kishtwar district, he said.

Tariq, who had joined the ranks of Hizbul Mujahideen in November last year, was arrested in December last year, officials said.

He had purchased the old .303 rifle and ammunition for Rs 1.50 lakh, they said.

Senior officer said that weapon was manufactured in the seventies.
