BARAMULLA – A porter was killed and another injured when they were hit by a shell fired by Pakistani troops in the border town of Uri in this north Kashmir district, official sources said on Saturday.
They said Pak troops on Friday violated ceasefire and resorted to unprovoked and indiscriminate firing and shelling, targeting forward posts and civilian areas in Uri.
A shell exploded when a group of porters were on way to forward position with essentials at Kamalkote, they said.
Two local porters were injured critically after a shell exploded near them, they said, adding both the injured were rushed to hospital, where one of them identified as Ishteyaq Ahmad succumbed.
Sources said Indian troops also retaliated and hit Pak posts across the Line of Control (LoC). However, damage suffered by the Pak side was not immediately known, sources said.
They said Pak troops have been violating 2003 ceasefire to help militants in launch pads to sneak into this side before the infiltration routes are closed due to snowfall.
However, they said troops guarding the LoC are already on high alert and fully prepared to foil any infiltration bid from Pakistani side of Kashmir, where a large number of trained militants are waiting in launch pads. (Agencies)
