Srinagar Resident Held For Hate Video

SRINAGAR — Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday arrested a person on charges of spreading sectarian hatred on social media.

“Recently, a video surfaced on the popular social networking application Tik-Tok which was promoting hatred against a particular sect thereby promoting feelings of animosity and hatred between different sections of the society in the backdrop of the recent rape incident of Bandipora which had escalated the sectarian tension,” a police spokesperson said in a statement.

Police said that after strenuous efforts the culprit was apprehended.

Police has appealed people not to pay heed to the rumours and fake news and not to fall prey to the propaganda of such elements inimical to peace.

A case FIR 67/19 U/s 153-153A/505 RPC was registered and investigation has also been taken up at Police Station Safakadal.

Kashmir has been on the edge following the rape of a  three-year-old girl in Bandipora district with students holding protests across Kashmir against the ghastly incident.

The state police has constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the rape case and one person has been arrested.

Residents of Malikpora village where the incident took place have denounced attempts by certain vested interests to turn the tragedy into a sectarian issue.

“A tragedy has hit our village and there are vested interests making it a sectarian issue,” a media report quoted  Mohammad Manzoor, a local businessman, as saying earlier this week.

Students took out protest marches at Degree College at Bemina and Amar Singh College in Gogji Bagh areas of the city as well, the officials said.

Religious, political and social groups have condemned the incident and called for maintaining peace and harmony.
