Highway Closure Inhuman:  KEA

SRINAGAR —  Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) on Friday termed the closure of the Kashmir highway twice a week as “inhuman” and said that it will only alienate the people of Kashmiris further.

“Such inhuman decisions can only alienate the people further. The government must look into the matter and reconsider its decision on priority because public movement on roads was not curbed even in 1990s,” KEA chief Muhammad Yasin Khan said in a statement issued here.

He said Kashmiris don’t have any alternative routes other than the highway which is the lifeline from Banihal to Kupwara.

“How will the patients reach hospitals? How will students reach educational institutions? How will the office goers reach offices? And how will business go on?” Khan questioned.

Khan said the people have a fundamental right to road access and it cannot be curbed in the garb of security reasons. “Why doesn’t the government explore possibility of dedicated rail service for troops from Banihal to Kupwara,” he said and appealed Governor SP Malik to personally look into the matter.

“Such inhuman decisions can only alienate the people further. The government must look into the matter and reconsider its decision on priority because public movement on roads was even not curbed in 1990s,” he said.
