JAMMU A five-year-old girl, a woman and a BSF officer were killed Monday as India and Pakistan armed resorted to heavy shelling on forward areas along the Line of Control in Jammus Poonch district, officials said.
Sixteen persons, including six soldiers and three women, were injured in the incident, they said.
Officials here said Sobia (5) was killed and two persons suffered injuries when a shell exploded near their house in a village in Shahpur sub-sector along LoC late Monday afternoon, they said.
A BSF officer was killed in ceasefire violation by Pakistani army along LoC in Poonch district, officials said.
The officials added that six houses were damaged in the intense shelling by Pakistani troopers.
Pakistan used heavy weaponry and 120 mm mortar bombs to target scores of civilian areas along LoC in Poonch, triggering panic among border residents, they said.
Meanwhile a woman was killed and five civilians, three of them from fairer gender, were injured along the LoC in this mountainous district on Monday night.
Sajad Bi wife of Mohd Yaqaoob died due to fresh shelling in Balonie in Krishna Ghate sector, local sarpanch Mohd Shareef said.
Meanwhile five more civilians were injured in the fresh shelling and firing by Pakistan in the sector in the district.
SDPO Mendhar Neeraj Padyar told GNS that Pakistan army in violation of the ceasefire targeted civilian areas in the sector, leading the injuries to five persons, three of them from fairer gender. While all the injured have been hospitalized, he said, Indian army retaliated the fire effectively.
Meanwhile, due to prevailing situation on Line of Control, all the government and private schools located in 0-5 KM range from LoC in Poonch district shall remain closed Tuesday, officials ordered. (with inputs from PTI and GNS)
