SRINAGAR — A militant was killed in a gunfight with state forces on Thursday in Yaroo area of Langate in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

“A cordon and search operation was launched by joint forces in the Yaroo area of Langate after credible inputs about the presence of  militants in the area,”  said a police official.

“As the searches were going on, the search party was fired upon by the hiding militants. The fire was retaliated leading to a gunfight,” he added.

“In the ensuing encounter, one militant was killed and the body was retrieved from the site of encounter,” the official said.

He identified the slain militant as Danish Ahmad Dar resident of Sopore and belonged to Jaish-e-Mohammad militant outfit.

He said that incriminating materials including rifle and grenades were recovered from the site of encounter.

“Citizens are requested not to venture inside the encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosives materials if any,” he added.
