Unemployment is a global problem. In J&K States the problem has assumed alarming proportion. According to one reliable source there are over six lakh unemployed youth in J&K with a negligible percentage of them being illiterate.
Chenab valley with a population of around one million is on top of the list of districts in Jammu region as far unemployment is concerned. Thousands of youth with diplomas and degrees in academic, law and engineering beside medical line are eagerly waiting for want of a job and means of subsistence. Over the years the claims of successive governments to tackle the growing employment through different schemes of providing gainfull self employment too have failed to attract the youth. The schemes though conceived with good intention do fall in the trap of red tape and apathy of Govt officials, favoritism and nepotism thus leaving the youth disenchanted and frustrated making them susceptible to any mischief.
Only a small number of units have been set up in Chenab Valley during the past nine decades. The Govt jobs have become scanty. To lessen the pressure of increasing unemployment corporate houses and big construction companies have been allotted various projects in the State. But executing firm instead of employing local skilled and unskilled work force prefer to provide employment to people hailing from outside the J&K State.
In Chenab Valley the locals have always complained of discrimination by the executing agencies of major power and road projects. To combat and arrest the rising graph of unemployment in Chenab Valley urgent measures need to be taken by the Govt. It should be made mandatory for executing agencies to absorb maximum number of locals in various projects. The lengthy and cumbersome self employment schemes should be made easy and soft Industrial activity, especially based upon forest waste, be introduced in the sub-region.
The financial institutions and banks should lend money to the entrepreneurs hassle free. Benefits of MGNREGA should reach to the job seekers in rural areas. The agriculture and animals husbandry related schemes should be given wide publicity to attract more and more people to them. Regular monitoring of different schemes along with matrix of implementation be made an essential part.
