Srinagar Shivers Under Security Blanket

SRINAGAR — Authorities beefed up security across Kashmir on Saturday, a day ahead of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Valley.

As part of it, hundreds of bikes across the Srinagar despite most of them possessing valid documents. 

Sources said almost every police station has seized bikes and a number of people told police seized them irrespectively any shortcoming in terms of documents.   

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who heads the Hurriyat Conference (M) was placed under house detention while Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani remains under house arrests.

A team of PM’s Special Protection Group (SPG) has taken over all the venues Modi is scheduled to visit, sources said.

Reports said frisking of commuters continued throughout the Saturday. On Friday, government forces carried out search drills in city centre Lal Chowk  and drones fitted with cameras were used during the searches.

A thick security cover has been thrown around the main venue Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) on the banks of the Dal Lake.

Sources said security forces personnel in hundreds armed with metal detectors and accompanied by

sniffer dogs have been deployed in and around the venues of the Modi’s visit and entry into the areas has been restricted.
