SRINAGAR Five members of a family, including two children, died apparently due to asphyxiation at their rented accommodation here, police said Saturday.
Khurshid Ahmad Sheikh (45), a resident of Kupwara district’s Tangdhar area, had come here a few days ago with his family for the treatment of his mother, a police official said.
They had rented a house in Boat Colony near SKIMS Hospital, Bemina, where the elderly woman, Reshma, was being treated, the official said.
On Friday night, the five members of the family apparently died due to suffocation, he said.
The official said Khurshid, his wife, Gulshan, their two children, Faizan, 8, and Furqaan, 5, and Reshma were found dead.
He said the cause of the death is being ascertained and the bodies have been sent for an autopsy. However the deaths apparently occurred due asphyxiation, he said, adding the police have registered a case in the matter.
Reportedly, the family had taken room on rent last week as one of the family member was getting treated at JVC Hospital, said a police spokesman.
After completion of all medico legal formalities, the bodies are being shifted to their native village, he said, adding Police has initiated a probe to ascertain the cause of their death.
Official said arrangements are being made for airlifting the bodies to their native place in Kupwara. The bodies are lying in PCR and would be flown to native Village in Tanghdar on 9 a. m. on Sunday, they added.
National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and vice-president Omar Abdullah expressed grief over the deaths.
Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president G A Mir and former PDP minister Altaf Bulhari expressed deep sorrow and asked the administration to ensure adequate relief to the bereaved family.
Senior CPI(M) leader M Y Tarigami urged the government to provide ex-gratia to their next of the kin.
Meanwhile, a man died after slipping from a roof top of his house while clearing snow in Bandipora town of north Kashmir.
Deputy Commissioner Bandipora Shahid Iqbal Choudary said the Mumtaz Ahmad, a shopkeeper of Ward 4 of Bandipora, received serious head injuries after he fell from the rooftop of his two-storey house while clearing the snow.
He was immediately shifted to district hospital however he died due to grave injuries, DC said.
Meanwhile, body of a 75-year-old woman, who died apparently due to cold after getting trapped at Sadna Top following heavy snowfall, was still lying in the area.
The deceased has been identified as Taja Begium, wife of Abdul Qayoom Khawaja, Teetwal Karnah. Besides, at least 45 passengers are reportedly stranded at the Sadna Top in Karnah area of north Kashmirs Kupwara district.
