SRINAGAR Former vice-chancellor of University of Kashmir, Professor Hamidi Kashmiri, who was a noted Urdu writer and critic passed away late last night. He was 86.
Kashmiri was a recipient of the Ghalib Award and Sahitya Akademi Award (2005). The Government of India honored him in 2010, with the third highest civilian award of Padma Shri. He had written many books and was considered as a great poet. He is credited with 50 books including Iqtishafi Tanqeed Ki Sheryat, Ainame Ibraaq, Mahasir Tanqeed, Riyasati Jammu Aur Kashmir Urdu Adab, Jadeed Kashir Shayeri and Shiekhul-Aalam Aur Shayeri.
Former finance minister Altaf Bukhari expressed deep shock and grief over the demise of Professor Hamidi Kashmiri, former vice chancellor of University of Kashmir, who passed away late last night.
Describing the deceased as one of the great scholars who lived a very simple life, Bukhari said the contribution of Prof Hamidi in the field of literature, poetry and prose shall be remembered for times to come.
He said the deceased was an illustrious son of the soil, who carved a niche in the field of literature as a great Urdu critic and earned a distinctive place outside the state as well.
He said that Prof Hamidis literary genius was recognized by the country by honouring him with many awards including Ghalib Award, Sahitya Akademi Award and the third highest civilian award of Padma Shri.
As an administrator, Late Prof. Hamidi sahib shall be remembered for his reforms in education during his tenure as the Vice Chancellor of University of Kashmir, the former finance minister said.
While expressing solidarity with the bereaved family, his friends and acquaintances, Bukhari prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and courage to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.
Vice President, J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Zafar Iqbal Manhas, mourned the demise of noted Urdu writer. While mourning the demise of the academic-litterateur, Manhas said that he shares the grief of the family and prays for eternal peace to the departed soul.
Describing Prof. Hamidi Kashmiri as a tall literary figure, the JKAACL Vice President said that the late writer-academic will always be remembered for his prolific literary works.
On account of his lifelong service to the fields of academics and literature, Prof. Hamidi will always be remembered by us all, Manhas said in his condolence message.
Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad expressed his deep sorrow on the sad demise of former VC, poet and critic Prof. Hamidi Kashmiri.
Hamidi sahab was an eminent scholar and his death has created a vacuum, which is otherwise a big loss to all of us. I pray the almighty to give strength and courage to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss. May the departed soul rest in peace, said Azad.
