BJP Desperate To Grab Control Of SMC: Mir

SRINAGAR — The State Congress president, G.A. Mir, Monday launched a scathing attack on BJP saying that the saffron party is desperate to “grab” power at Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC)

In a statement issued here, Mir said, “The upcoming elections of Srinagar Municipal Corporation are a good opportunity for right thinking elected members of Srinagar district to defeat the divisive politics of BJP and RSS.”

The Congress state president said that the election is a direct fight between Congress and BJP-RSS “sponsored candidates” expressing confidence that Congress “led amalgam is all set to take control of Srinagar Municipal Corporation on 6 November.”

Describing the upcoming election in Srinagar Municipal Corporation as a direct fight between Congress led secular amalgam and BJP-RSS combine, Mir said that the “saffron party is desperate enough to grab power, besides making inroads in Srinagar city with the support of their alliance partner, but the secular amalgam led by Congress will ensure their defeat in the election.” He said, “BJP RSS has always been desperate enough to erode the authority of democratic institutions in the State to serve their vested interests, besides exhibiting their existence, but the fact is that saffron party while having no base in Srinagar city fielded sponsored candidates in Corporations elections, which will not work, rather this process has further exposed the divisive politics of BJP.”

He blamed the right wing party for erosion of “democratic institutions in the country cautioning the elected corporators about the politics of exploitation on their part” and urged them to ensure defeat of candidates backed by the BJP.

Mir reiterated his appeal to all “secular and right thinking people to rise to the occasion” to defeat the BJP-RSS combine and their alliance partner to “ensure that the democratic institutions in the state are not eroded by the saffron party.” He added that the Congress “will continue to fight against the divisive politics of BJP and RSS.”
