Thousands Participate In His Funeral Prayers, Trigger Spontaneous Shutdown

SRINAGAR — A youth was killed in firing by security forces in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district after a massive search operation was launched by the joint team of army, CRPF and police in at-least 18 villages.

Doctors at the S.M.H.S. Hospital here said Fayaz Ahmad Wani, who was critically injured in firing by forces during street clashes, was declared dead on arrival.

Dr Saleem Tak, Medical Superintendent SMHS hospital, said had suffered a bullet injury in head.

Security forces used tear smoke shells and pellets to quell the protesters, injuring Wani in Dusoo village. He was first shifted to the Pulwama District Hospital, the police said.

Around half-a-dozen other civilians were also injured in the clashes.

The police said the stone-pelting mob clashed with the security forces during a cordon and search operation in Pulwama District.

The search operation began following reports about the presence of militants in some villages including Rohmu, Belou, Rajpora, Mitrigam, Putrigam, Frasipora, Gosuu, Kachherpora, Chek, Mirgund, Muran, Zagigam, Tukkarpora, Drabgam, Hanjan, Kamrazipora and others.

The killing sparked spontaneous shutdown and clashes in Pulwama. A large number of people hit to roads and organized pro-freedom protests.

While condemning the killing of youth, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq tweeted: “As Amarnath Yatra ends more than 20 villages of South Kashmir under massive cordon and search operation. Forces went berserk, in Murran, Pulwama one civilian Fayaz Ahmed shot dead by forces, more than 25 injured as people came out to resist the operation to harass them, terrorize them.”

Meanwhile, thousands of people participated in the funeral prayers of the youth who was laid to rest in the ancestral village.

This is not the first such operation by the forces in south Kashmir. These “area domination operations” are usually undertaken to keep the militants on the run and prevent them from establishing a foothold in the region.

This is the first civilian killing after S P Malik took over as the governor of the state. The BJP leader was appointed as government on August 23.
