NC With 10 Seats Emerges Single Largest Party

SRINAGAR — The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil polls have thrown up a hung house with the National Conference (NC) emerging as the single largest party, officials said Saturday.

No party was able to get a clear majority in the polls, they said.

Farooq Abdullah-led NC emerged as the single largest party with 10 seats in the polls which took place on  August 27. The Congress was positioned at the second place with eight seats.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) managed to win two seats, while its former alliance partner Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) – bagged just one seat, officials said, adding the saffron party has thus opened its account in the LAHDC Kargil elections.

Independent candidates won five seats in the elections, they said.

The Council has 30 seats out of which, the elections are held on 26 seats. Four councilors are nominated by the state government.

Meanwhile, National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah and Vice President Omar Abdullah thanked the people of Kargil for reposing faith in party.

Congratulating all the party workers who worked tirelessly in ensuring the party’s win, Farooq said, “I express gratitude to the people of Kargil for reposing faith in National Conference in spite of the challenges party is facing.

“The win is a testimony to our commitment of ensuring a society where everyone is equal irrespective of caste, creed, region, religion or color.”

Asking the elected representatives to become the agents of change, Farooq said, “God has given you an opportunity to work for welfare of the people and its upto you now to come up to their expectations,” adding, “People rejected money, instead they gave their stamp of approval for the stand NC has been espousing for all these years.”

Party Vice President Omar in his congratulatory message expressed happiness over the performance of party candidates in LAHDC elections.
