Police Registers FIR Against News Portal for Sharing Militants Write-up

SRINAGAR — Police on Tuesday said that it has taken cognizance of the ‘propaganda material’ circulated by a responsible portal involving a proscribed militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen wherein a member of this banned outfit has circulated certain material.

“The individual has been identified as Abdul Manan Wani, affiliated with a proscribed terror outfit HM,” said a police spokesperson adding that legal proceedings under relevant provisions have been initiated by the Police.

A police official confirmed that they have registered an FIR against a news portal and investigation has been taken up.

 Pertinently, since the start of militancy in Kashmir Valley, media houses have been carrying the press releases of militant organizations but this is for the first time that police have objected and have decided to initiate legal proceedings.

 Meanwhile, journalist fraternity has expressed anguish and described the police action as direct attack on the freedom of press. They have threatened to hit to roads against such curbs.
