Illegal Constructions Galore In Old City

SRINAGAR —  Several illegal constructions are coming up in some of the Srinagar’s old city areas in connivance of the concerned officials, residents allege.

The local residents said that at least 15 illegal constructions are coming up along Hawal-Eidgah Road, Zainakadal, Aali Kadal, Wazapora and other adjoining areas of the old city also known as Shehr-e-Khaas.

Dozens of constructions have come up on the banks of Khush-hal Sar and the illegal filling of lake is underway.

“These constructions are being raised in connivance of ward officers concerned of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC),” residents alleged.

They said that building permission norms had been ignored while allowing several constructions in these areas.

The locals have appealed the SMC authorities to look into the matter.

“Why should somebody having permission for construction, pay the bribe? If somebody objects, the officer stops the constructions,”  said a resident of Ali Kadal.

When contacted, Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Riyaz Ahmad said that people should approach him if they have any such issues and assured that he will look into the matter.
