Student Among 7 Persons Injured; Geelani, Mirwaiz Placed Under House Arrest, Malik Detained
SRINAGAR Kashmir Valley on Monday observed a complete shutdown against the civilian killings in south Kashmir even as seven persons including a student were injured in clashes with the government forces in north Kashmir.
All schools and colleges were also closed along with other educational institutions in the Valley for the day.
Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Geelani, Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were kept under house arrest while JKLF Chief Yasin Malik was detained and lodged in Police station Kothibagh.
The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) had called for the Valley-wide shutdown to protests against the unabated civilian killing.
Shops and business establishments remained closed in the entire Valley while public transport was mostly off the roads due to the strike, reports quoting eyewitnesses said.
Also, to thwart the protests, authorities had put parts of Srinagar including Old City and Maisuma under strict restrictions.
Similarly, restrictions were imposed in Kulgam town of south Kashmir to prevent people from staging protests against the killings, official sources said. A police officer told GNS that the decision was taken to maintain law and order.
The JRL comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Yasin Malik had called for the shutdown as two more civilians died on Sunday. While one of them was killed in forces’ action on protesters near the site of a gunfight in Kulgam, a youth from Anantnag succumbed at SKIMS Soura.
Meanwhile, three persons including a student of class 11th were injured allegedly in government forces action in Sopore and Handwara areas of north Kashmir. Elsewhere four policemen including two officers were injured due to stone-pelting at Ganapora area of Kralgund in Handwara.
Official sources said that a youth identified as Ubaid Manzoor son of Manzoor Ahmed Lone of Nadihal Sopore suffered a bullet wound in his right thigh after BSF troopers of 149 bn opened fire during clashes at Nadihal on Baramulla-Handwara highway today morning.
Eyewitnesses said that a group of students was protesting against the recent civilian killing in government forces firing in parts of Valley.
Medical Superintendent, Baramulla hospital, Dr Syed Masood said that the youth suffered firearm injury in the thigh.
A police officer when contacted confirmed the incident and said that the group of students were protesting and has blocked the road in the area.
In the meantime, a local news agency GNS reported that the force’s vehicle passed through the area and the protesting students hurled stones on it, he said, adding that the troopers fired some shots resulting in injuries to the student.
The injured student was immediately shifted to Baramulla district hospital where from he was referred to Srinagar for specialized treatment, he said.
“A case under FIR number 103/2018 under section 307, 336, 144 RPC has been registered with regard to the incident and further investigations initiated,” the officer said.
A group of people late afternoon pelted stones on police and CRPF at Ganapora area of Kralgund in Handwara area of northern Kupwara district.
“Four policemen including DSP Operations, Kralgund, Sahil Sharma and SHO concerned suffered injuries after being hit by stones,” an official said,
The joint team of forces fired tear smoke shells and pellets to disperse the group of people resulting in injuries to two persons namely Danish Ahmad and Umer Khazir.
While Danish is said to have received injuries after being hit by a shell, Umer received pellet wounds in his body parts.
Both the injured were shifted to Sub-District Hospital Langate where from the duo was referred to Srinagar hospital for specialized treatment.
