Dozens injured in clashes
SRINAGAR Soon after the culmination of Eid-ul-Fitr prayers, protests erupted between youth and government forces in different parts of the Valley on Saturday. A youth was killed and 22 persons, including 11 cops, were injured in violent clashes that erupted after the Eid prayers in Anantnag town in south Kashmir.
Sources said that police and paramilitary CRPF opened fire and pellets upon protesters, resulting in injuries to a number of youth at Ashijipora and its adjoining areas.
One among the injured Sheraz Ahmad Naikoo son of Ghulam Mohammed Naikoo of Brakpora succumbed to injuries at Janglat Mandi hospital where he was taken along with other injured.
When contacted, Medical Superintendent (MS), District hospital Anantnag, Dr. Majeed Mahrib, confirmed the death and said that he had multiple injuries.
Sources said that Sheeraz had pellets in his face, neck, and chest fired from very close range.
Meanwhile, a police spokesman said Sheraz died in a grenade blast.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that a hand Grenade exploded resulting in the death of one Sheraz Ahmad S/O Gh Mohiuddin R/O Brakpora due to splinter injuries and his right hand got fully damaged. Further details are being ascertained,” he said.
Clashes also erupted in Shopian town where at least seven persons were injured. Youth clashed with the forces after prayers culminated at Eidgah Srinagar. Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq addressed the gathering for the first time in past eight years. Clashes also erupted in North Kashmir’s Kupwara.
One person sustained injuries in the clashes in Safakadal area of Srinagar city soon after the prayers, a police official said.
Hurriyat (G) spokesman said that Syed Ali Geelani was prevented from heading towards the Eidgah for the prayers.

Muslims from all walks of life made a beeline for Eidgahs (prayer ground) and mosques to offer Eid prayers as a thanksgiving for the month-long fasting of Ramazan.
Officials said the biggest gathering was witnessed at Hazratbal shrine where thousands of faithful offered Eid prayers.
They said the second largest gathering was held at Eidgah in the old city.
Big gatherings of Eid prayers were also held in Sonawar and Soura Shrines in the heart of the city, they said, adding similar gatherings were held at all districts headquarters and major towns of the Kashmir Valley.

Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, joined a large number of people to offer her Eid prayers at Ziyarat Hazrat Syed Sahib (R.A.), Sonwar, Srinagar.
