Under Trial Prisoner Escapes In Sopore, 2 Cops Suspended

SOPORE — Year and a half after his arrest, a militant escaped from police custody in north Kashmir’s Sopore area on Tuesday.

Official sources said that the incident took place when police were transporting Abdul Majeed Mir, 24 back to the police station Bomie soon after court hearing ended. Police have launched a manhunt to nab the fleeing inmate. Mir, a resident of Tujjer village of Sopore, was arrested on 25 November 2016 in case (FIR number 50/2016 under section 13 ULA). The case pertains to an encounter between militants and a joint team of police and Mir, an OWG of LeT, was arrested along with a pistol three hours after the gunfight.     

SSP Sopore Javid Iqbal confirmed the incident and said that an inquiry has been initiated into the case.

“Under what circumstances the inmate fled is the matter of investigation,” SSP said, adding that two policemen escorting the prisoner have placed immediately under suspension. “An inquiry has also been ordered into the case”, SSP added. (With inputs from GNS)
