Large Number Of People Attend Funerals Of Slain Cops In North Kashmir
SRINAGAR Two policemen were killed and at least ten paramilitary CRPF personnel injured in twin pre-dawn attacks by militants in south Kashmir’s Pulwama and Anantnag districts on Tuesday.
A police official said three policemen, guarding a government building, were shot at in the darkness by an unknown number of militants at Takiya Wagam opposite Government Degree College Pulwama. “Militants attacked the guard posts at the Pulwama court complex. In the exchange of fire, two policemen were killed,” said the police spokesman.
Two service rifles were also reportedly looted from the picket, said the police.
The third injured policeman, Manzoor Ahmad, was shifted to Srinagar’s Shri Maharaja Hari Singh hospital for treatment, the police said.
The deceased cops included Selection Grade Constables Ghulam Rasool Lone and Ghulam Hassan Wagay.
Militants also hurled grenades on a CRPF party at Anantnag’s Janglat Mandi. “Ten CRPF personnel sustained minor injuries. They were shifted to a hospital for treatment and are stable,” a police officer said.
He said that the militants hurled the grenade on CRPF party near Janglat Mandi. The incident occurred during their withdrawal from the area, he said further. Ten CRPF troopers sustained splinter injuries in the incident and have been hospitalized, he said.
Meanwhile, thousands of people attended funeral prayers of both the slain policemen at their respective native villages in Wohlutra Rafiabad and Gagal Lolab in Kupwara.
Wagay was lone bread earner of ten members of family including four children and old aged parents, locals said.
They said Wagay was a good human being and never troubled any villager. He always used to help his neighbors and will be missed by everybody in the village, locals said. The deceased, they said, was a pious human being and would lead Friday prayers in local Mosque. Also thousands of people took part in the funeral prayers of Lone.
Meanwhile, people at both the places urged India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir issue once for all.
