SRINAGAR A two-member committee of judges has called for urgent need to protect environs of Gulmarg, the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir.
The two member committee comprising Registrar Judicial, Muhammad Yousuf Wani and Joint Ragistrar Farooq Ahmad Bhat said that environs of Gulmarg Ski resort are fraught with dangers and that was immediate need to preserve the resort.
They said that unrestrained entry of horses and ponies inside the Gulmarg does not seem to be fully needful.
The report further says that Gulmarg is famous all over the world not because of five star hotels, Gondola and horse riding but for its location amidst forests and meadows.
The court had ordered constitution of the panel while hearing the PIL filed in 2012 by one Mohammad Rafiq Zargar, seeking directions for protection of fragile environment of Gulmarg.
The court has time and again said that a duty is cast on all the functionaries of the State responsible and entrusted with the assignment of maintaining the glory and beauty of the World famous tourist resort, Gulmarg, to maintain its standard in all its forms.
The high court has already directed chief executive officer of Gulmarg Development Authority to free state land in the ski resort from the occupation of encroachers.
People have built structures over the illegally-occupied land. The army, which had been allotted 130 acres (1049 kanals) is in illegal possession of 1412 kanals.
In the process of retrieving the land from encroachers, a bench of justices Muzaffar Hussain Attar and Ali Mohammad Magrey ordered, the deputy inspector general of police, north, should provide assistance to the CEO wherever needed.
A panel headed by Kashmir divisional commissioner had told the court that a number of lessees have occupied land more than allotted to them legally.
The panel, which has submitted its report to the chief secretary, had also identified the land under armys possession.
