Anantnag shuts on Trade body’s call

Share

Anantnag—Following the call given by the Traders Federation Anantnag, a complete shutdown was Saturday observed in the town to protest against what they termed as an alleged highhandedness of the Police.

The United Traders Association Anantnag had appealed people to observe complete shutdown to protest against the Police for arresting the shopkeepers during the clashes on Friday.

The traders body also staged a sit-in outside the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office against the Police and demanded an immediate transfer of the concerned Station House Officer (SHO).

The traders alleged that some shopkeepers were mercilessly beaten by Police during the clashes that erupted in the town, after Post Friday prayers, yesterday.

They said that the shutdown will continue until the SHO Anantnag is transferred.

“After clashes with protesters on Friday, the police party headed by SHO not only lobbed tear-smoke shells inside the shops but also thrashed of the traders. The police also detained some of the shopkeepers at Reshi Bazar,” the protesting traders told Kashmir Observer.

They said that if police excesses don’t stop, they will go for an indefinite strike.

Shops and other business establishments remained shut in the district except KP road where shopkeepers did normal business.

Reports said that youth at Reshi Bazar, Mattan Chowk and Achabal Ada emerged in large numbers and pelted stones on government forces. Witnesses said that police lobbed tear-gas shells to disperse the protesting youth. Due to clashes and shutdown, normal life was disrupted in the town.
