Srinagar: Scores of patients were rushed to SKIMS Bemina for surgeries on Saturday after fire gutted the operation theatre in Lala Ded maternity hospital on Friday evening. Reports said on Saturday evening that  at least 28 surgeries were conducted in 24 hours at SKIMS.

Reports said after the operation theatre in LD hospital was damaged in a fire incident, the patients scheduled to get operated upon were shifted to the SKIMS Medical College Hospital Bemina.

“We have operated at least 28 referral patients since last evening while more 48 such cases of Gynae and Obstetric are still admitted in different wards in addition to the routine admission in Gynae and Obstetric,” SKIMS officials said.

The officials said that once the news of sudden closure of Operation Theatre Complex went to periphery, the referral of Obstetric patients in critical condition reported to the SKIMS Medical College Hospital Bemina directly.

The Principal of SKIMS Medical College, Dr Riyaz Ahmad Untoo without wasting any time directed to accommodate these emergency patients on all available beds.  Civil and Electrical Engineering Department managed to remove raw materials being used for renovation, cleaning of the ward with disinfectants and temporary electrification of the Ophthalmology ward as the same is under major renovation since last few days.

“22 new beds were allocated in this Ophthalmology ward alone. The additional staff in all related departments was augmented and even senior consultants of Gynae and Obstetric department including the HOD pressed into service and two more operating tables belonging to other surgical wings provided to tackle this emergency in the night with the result more than 28 major surgeries including some critical were carried in the night against average obstetric surgeries of 4-5,” the officials added.

They informed that total admission in this department in few hours was 53 and at present 48 such cases of Gynae and Obstetric are still admitted in different wards in addition to the routine admission in Gynae and Obstetric. “At present, four operating tables are working,” the officials said.

However, the officials said that besides the referral cases, the patients from different places of Kashmir who came to know about the fire incident at LD hospital were directly visiting the hospital for treatment and surgeries thereby putting the huge work load on the hospital.

Pertinently fire engulfed Operation theatre at LD hospital in the late evening hours on Friday, which created chaos among the patients and the attendants.

The patients admitted in the hospital were immediately evacuated.

The fire was reportedly caused by the short circuit while no casualty was reported in the incident. (KNS)
