Shopan: Life remained crippled for the second day Friday in South Kashmir district of Shopian, where people are protesting against the disappearance of a youth in police custody.
However, police claimed that Zubair Ahmad, a known stone-pelter, had escaped from the police station on May 1. Shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the roads in the main town and adjoining areas for the second day today. Work in the government offices, banks and other commercial establishments besides educational institutions was also affected due to strike. Locals warned that strike would continue till Zubair was released.
They said Zubair, a resident of Bona Bazar, Shopian, was arrested in 2015 under Public Safety Act (PSA) for his alleged involvement in stone-pelting. However, after serving his detention, he was to be released, the local resident said, alleging that under suspicious circumstances, he disappeared from the police custody. Police on May 1 claimed that Zubair escaped from police post Keegam.
Father of Zubair alleged that a day before his (Zubair) disappearance, police informed him that he would be released from the detention. He said since the disappearance of Zubair, he has not contacted any family members or friends
