Srinagar: Students clashed with government forces on Thursday at different places in the Kashmir Valley demanding release of their classmates arrested during clashes at various educational institutes in past four weeks.
Scores of students from Government Degree College Magam of Budgam boycotted classes and took to the streets, demanding action against forces allegedly involved in thrashing students of Degree College Pulwama on April 15 and others during subsequent protests. They also demanded that students, who were arrested during clashes be released immediately.
The students blocked Magam-Kralpora road and pelted stones on security forces convoy after which the forces burst teargas shells to disperse them. The protests were also reported at the Government Higher Secondary School Langate in Kupwara where students tried to take out a protest march to the main chowk.
Reports of clashes were also coming from some other parts of the Valley, including Dooru. Sopore and Langate.
In Dooru area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, students of Higher Secondary School Dooru staged demonstrations against thrashing of some students by the army in the area.
Local sources said that armymen thrashed some of the students after stones were hurled on the army vehicles.
Massive clashes between students and forces ensued in the area following which shopkeepers downed their shutters.
In Langate area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, clashes erupted between students and government forces after students of Government Higher Secondary School Langate took to streets to protest against the student arrests.
Forces used tear gas to disperse the protesting students, triggering clashes.
In Sopore town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla disrict the students of Government Boys Higher Secondary school Sopore and Government Degree College Sopore clashed with government forces at Iqbal market in Sopore town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Eyewitnesses said that forces resorted to tear smoke shelling on the students after they pelted stones on them outside the main gate of the school at Iqbal market here.
They said that forces also lobbed scores of tear gas shells inside the premises of the school, triggering chaos.
The protests by students were triggered by a government forces raid on Degree College Pulwama on April 15 in which more than 50 students, including girls, were injured.
