Meanwhile Shia Muslims thronged graveyards lighting candles and praying for the departed relations on Shab-e-Barat.

They also observe the day as birthday of last of the Shia Imams.

Before the break of dawn thousands assembled at shrine of Syed Mehdi Hussaini Jalali at Gupkar on the shores of Dal Lake in Srinagar and prayed for the early reapperance of Imam Mehdi, the awaited imam. Aga Syed Aijaz Rizvi led the function.

According to Shia belief Imam Mehdi, the 12th and the last in the lineage of Imams, will reappear one day along with Prophet Jesus and fill this earth with justice.
