SRINAGAR: Riding on a powerful 70 off 42 balls from Faroz Ahmad Budgam XI beat Ompura XI by five wickets in the inaugural game of Aga Syed Mehdi Memorial T20 cricket tournament played at sports stadium Budgam on Monday.
Thanks to Farozs heroics with the bat Budgam XI achieved the target of 171 set by Ompura XI in the 19th over with loss of only five wickets. Earlier Ompura after winning the toss posted a decent score of 170 for the loss of nine wickers in the allotted 20 overs thanks largely to Imtiyaz Mallas blistering 55-ball 91. Faroz was declared man of the match for his match winning knock.
The inaugural ceremony of the tournament-organised by Al-Mehdi Foundation Budgam- saw a high profile attendance with National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah inaugurating the 14th edition.
According to a statement from the organisers, Dr Farooq inaugurated the tournament by facing ceremonial first ball besides supervising the toss between the two sides.
The tournament has become a regular fixture in Budgams sports calendar.
As many as 64 teams are vying for the top glory.
Interacting with the players from across the Valley, Dr. Farooq Abdullah encouraged them to strive in both sports and academics alike and hone their skills to compete at national and international levels. Dr. Farooq Abdullah also sought the insights of the youth in efforts that need to be undertaken to improve the sports infrastructure in the State.
Senior NC leader and Former Minister Aga Syed Mehmood and NC Leader Aga Yusuf, along with the organizing committee of the Al Mehdi Foundation were also present on the occasion.
