R&B to macadamize more than 1000 km roads this year: CE

SRINAGAR: As roads in the Kashmir Valley continue to be giving bumpy ride, the government said that the repairing and macadamisation is being hampered by the wet weather prevailing over the region.

Roads in towns and localities remain potholed and damaged by the winter and continual rainfall in from this year’s spring season.

As per R&B 8,000 km road surface in the valley required macadamisation following the damage to them in 2014 floods. Post-floods 1,600 km roads in 2015 and 375 km in 2016 were macadamised.

However, the unrest and snowy winter in 2016 did not allow the department time to repair and macadamise roads.

Chief Engineer, R&B, Kashmir, Sheikh Abdul Hameed said that the department has a target of macadamising more than 1000 kilometers in Kashmir this season.

“We have started macadamising roads across Kashmir but weather is hampering our work. Macadamisation has been started in Mutton in Anantnag disitrct, Kulgam and Tral,” the CE said.

He said that the government has given approval for macadamising roads in addition to the target.

“We will make all roads macadamised and motor able this year,” he said.

The chief engineer said that under PMGSY 537 crore projects have been sanctioned for providing road connectivity.

“We have started tendering process for PMGSY,” he said. (KNS)
