Over 2100 Cases Pending in SHRC

Srinagar: At least 2,179 cases are pending with Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission while 5,767 cases have been disposed off since the inception of the Commission in 1997.

SHRC is an autonomous state body with quasi-judicial powers tasked to investigate any violation of human rights in the state.

The body was constituted in January 1997 by the National Conference government under the Protection of Human Rights Act.

The officials in the SHRC said that 7,484 cases have been registered in the commission since its inception.

“Out of 7, 484 registered cases, 5767 cases have been disposed off,” the officials said.

They said that during the period of headless commission, 462 fresh complaints were registered here.

“After Justice Bilal Nazki was appointed as the commission’s chairperson, more 142 cases were registered by the commission,” the officials informed.

Officials said that 428 cases were disposed off since Justice Nazki assumed the charge as chairperson.

Former Chief Justice of Orissa High Court, Bilal Nazki assumed the charge of chairperson of SHRC on November 4 of last year.

The SHRC was without a chairperson since 2011 and later it became non-functional since June 2014 after the last of its members completed their term. KNS
