2 Banks Burgled in 2 Hours in South Kashmir

Share

Pulwama: Two banks were burgled in a space of two hours by young men with guns, in the southern district of Pulwama, making the robberies look like a well-thought out plan that the government forces have blamed on militant outfits. The militant groups have denied the accusation, saying they were flush with cash and didn’t need to rob the banks.

In the last nearly five months young men, with their faces hidden behind masks, carrying guns, have walked into as many as eight branches of different banks and stolen wads of cash from the branches as bank employees’ watched in disbelief and horror.

The police all along have blamed militants but they have rejected the charge. Last Monday militants attacked a Jammu and Kashmir bank vehicle that was piled with cash. The militants killed five policemen and two guards. The Hizbul Mujahideen militants denied they attacked the vehicle to steal the money. In any case, the cash had already been disbursed among various branches of the bank in the area.

In the first robbery Wednesday gunmen looted a bank in the Wahibugh village of the Pulwama district Police sources said that three masked men carrying guns barged inside a Ellaquai Dehati Bank branch at Wahibugh and looted around five lakh rupees.

Later some gunmen forced their way into a Jammu Kashmir Bank branch in Nehama, Kakapora  and looted Rs. 1.30 lakh.

Gunmen had on Tuesday looted 65000 rupees from an Ellaquai Dehati bank in Kader village of adjacent Shopian district.
