Srinagar: Two persons were killed and four others injured in Uri after a man fired from his licensed 12-bore rifle on a group of people during a scuffle on land dispute. The accused along with 20 others has been arrested by the police.

According to witnesses, the accused Mushtaq Sheikh fired indiscriminately when a group of men went to his house to resolve a land dispute.

Mushtaq rushed outside his house and fired indiscriminately from his rifle towards the group. Six persons were hit by bullets resulting in the death of two persons and injuries to four others.

While Javaid Ahmad of Silikoot, Uri, died on the spot, Jahangir Ahmad of Trikanjan succumbed on the way to hospital.

Those injured have been identified as Faisal Ahmad, Muhammad Afzal, Ilyas Ahmad and Ghulam Hassan Chalkoo. They are being treated in the Baramulla hospital and their condition was stated to be stable by the doctors.

Witnesses said that the deceased and the injured had no association with the two rival groups.

“Javaid was walking on the road when he was hit by flying bullets while Jahangir was a bystander like other injured persons when the scuffle broke out,” eyewitnesses said.

A police official said that they have registered an FIR under section 302, 307 RPC and have started inquest proceedings into the incident. (KNS)
