Kashmiris Put At Mercy of Forces: Hurriyat (M)

SRINAGAR: Condemning continuous house detention and curbs on religious activities of Hurriyat Conference (M) chief, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the Hurriyat Conference (M) spokesperson termed it as “frustration of ruling regime which is bent upon to restrict and curb the peaceful activities of resistance leadership”.

“The rulers, in order to carry out the process of sham elections, have put the whole population of Kashmir at the mercy of government forces and on the other are not allowing the resistance leadership to put forward their views before the people,” the Hurriyat Conference (M) spokesperson said in a statement.

The spokesperson also condemned the arrest of Mukhtar Ahmad Waza and house detention of Media Advisor of Hurriyat Conference (M), Adv Shahid-ul-Islam and termed it “completely undemocratic”.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson said that the convener of the “Azad” Kashmir chapter of Mirwaiz led Hurriyat Conference, Faiz Naqashbandi, led a high level delegation of its leaders including Shamima Shawl and Amjad Yousuf to attend the 34th session of UNHRC held in Geneva.

“The delegates held meetings with various officials of the UN and representatives of other international organization during which they apprised them about the various facets of vexed Kashmir dispute including the ongoing political and human rights situation in Kashmir,” the spokesperson informed.

The notable UN officials who met the Hurriyat Conference (M) delegates include UN special rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly, Maina Kiai; Special rapporteur on minority issues, Ritika Izak-ndiaye; Special representative of the of the secretary-general for children and armed conflict Leila Zerroughi and other representatives of the international body.

“During the meeting, the Hurriyat Conference delegates apprised Maina kiai about the curbs and restriction being imposed on the social, political and religious activities of Kashmiris. Referring to the time and again house arrest of APHC Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the delegates told the rapporteur that the government has imposed curbs on his social, political and religious activities, adding, despite being the religious head cleric of Kashmir, Mirwaiz was not allowed to offer Friday prayers on many occasions. They further told the UN rapporteur that the state was utilizing all the draconian methods to restrict the peaceful political activities of pro-freedom leadership. Besides, they told the UN representative that the state was using different means to weaken the resistance centric politics of Kashmiris,” Hurriyat Conference (M) spokesperson said.

In another meeting with Leila Zerroughi, the delegates apprised the rapporteur about the “state sponsored terrorism being perpetrated against the people of disputed Kashmir territory including Kashmir”. “They told her that state was using violent methods against civilians besides unabated use of pellet guns have left hundreds of people, mostly children, fully or partially blinded. They told the rapporteur that government forces have a license to kill innocent at mere suspicion, they are allowed to do anything what they like with Kashmiris even as they are using anti-democratic and anti-people means to suppress people so that they retreat from their demand for right to self determination promised to them by the United Nations.”
