Srinagar: The unprofessionalism while dealing with general public by traffic cops is brewing resentment among the local population.
Commuters alleged that for their no fault, traffic cops, want to meet their target and Challan maximum number of people.
They said that vehicle tasked with tow the cars from wrong parking has to meet its target every day. In effort to meet its target, it sometimes toes a vehicle which is actually not at wrong parking, they alleged.
I was in my car at Hari Singh High Street here. I was on staring and car was on start mode. I had just stopped car to give lift to my neighbor, Fayaz Ahmad, a commuter told KNS.
He added that the traffic cops came and asked him to de-board from the car.
I thought they want to check my vehicle documents. But to my surprise, they towed my car and challenged me later for wrong parking, he said.
The commuters said that traffic police department is trying to impress the government by presenting itself as a smart revenue generator agency.
Imposing fine on traffic rule violators is good. We must hail efforts of authorities for that. However, harassing an innocent on the name of violation which he actually doesnt commit is injustice and against the principles of natural justice, said Lateef Ahmad, a commuter.
The commuters said that traffic cops must perform the duty with ethics and adhere to rule of law. We are governed by rule of law and not by the rule of man. The cops, in no way can misuse their official position and powers, they said.
The powers and authority in hands of officials is the trust of people. Breach of it amounts to criminal breach of trust, they said.
They added that abusive or aggressive language by cops while dealing with public could result in law and order problem.
There was law and order problem at Batamaloo after a traffic cop misbehaved with one of the youth. The bizarre is that later the senior officials of these cops shield their wrong doings. That is sad, said Showkat Ahmad of Batamaloo.
The commuters said that imposition of fine for traffic rule violation is done for a purpose. The purpose is to ensure road safety, to ensure no innocent victims get into an accident. The purpose is not for police officers to act suave and forceful towards innocent drivers and commuters, they said.
The character of the official on road dealing with public must depict the humble and democratic appearance form of government and not that of dictator, commuters demanded.
The pitch of the voice, body language and imposition of fine within the limitations of law is important. That would also help the authorities to mend the way of violators. The reaction from the public is inevitable in case officials act as they are above the law, said a group of students of Law Department at Kashmir University here.
Talking to KNS, SSP Traffic Fayaz Lone said most of the people who are challaned are those who dont stick to the one way traffic diversions at various places. The maximum violators are those who dont stick to the one way traffic diversions, he said.
Lone said the vehicles that are being towed away are photographed first. We produce the challans before court. Every vehicle we tow away, are being filmed to keep the proof that the vehicle was at a wrong place. Every day I get dozens of calls from people to send a tow-away vehicle for lifting the wrong parking cars, he said. (KNS)
