Srinagar: At least 21 structures, including 13 residential house, were gutted in a massive fire in north Kashmir district of Kupwara, official sources said here this evening.

They said fire broke out in a residential house situated on the foothills of Bangus Mountains in Waderpayen Handwara in Kupwara. Fire tenders from different parts of the district were rushed to the spot to douse off the leaping flames, clearly visible from a distance.

However, the flames spread to nearby houses due to strong wind, they said, adding before the fire was brought under control, 13 houses and eight cow sheds were damaged. “Dry grass stocked in the houses and chow sheds also made it difficult to stop the fire from spreading to other structures,” they said, adding the cause of the fire was not immediately known.
