Srinagar: A large number of officials including several senior officers have preferred to keep away from their offices in valley as most of them have fled to Jammu.

According to the rules, no government official could stay off from duty for three days in a row without a solid reason, but the government officials remain absent for weeks together.

On Wednesday when KNS tried to contact a number of heads in Srinagar, the response was same.

“(Director Sahab Delhi main hain), the Director is in New Delhi from the last couple of days,” said one of the officials who picked up landline number (2452052) of Director Health service Kashmir.

However, surprisingly when again it was called on the same number this time the response was different. “Director is in the field”.

Similarly, when this KNS correspondent called Director Fishers on landline number (2312046), the answer was no different. (Sahab Jammu Main Hain), the officer is in Jammu.

The Director Agriculture when contacted was also not available in the office. “Sahab Jammu gayay hain, the officer has gone to Jammu; he will be available after few days”.

Chief engineer Roads and Buildings (R&B) when contacted on number (2311364) was also not available in the office. (Sahab haz gayee Juam), the officer has gone to Jammu, I am not aware when he will return,” said the official who picked the phone.

The Managing Director Cable car corporation when contacted on (2435837) was also not available. “(Sahab Jammu main Hain) the officer is in Jammu to attend the meeting,” responded one of the official.

A top government official said that work in the departments involving public dealing has come to a grinding halt. Though lower ranking officials reach the offices but are not able to work in absence of the in-charges.

Sources informed that some low ranking officials prefer to go on leave or not attend offices as they are unable to bear the enormous pressure and work load without the higher officials.

Common people have expressed displeasure over the functioning of government offices.

People alleged that the government officers receive their salaries and other benefits, but they do not perform their duty in a proper way in the valley.

Habib-ullah, a local said he had been visiting the Chief Engineer R&B Kashmir for the last few days, but every time he could not find him in the office.

People have appealed the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to emphasize officers to perform their duty in a proper way. (KNS)
