ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s ex-President and co-chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Asif Ali Zardari, returned to Pakistan from Dubai in a private jet on Friday ending his self-imposed exile after 18 months.
Hour before his arrival, the paramilitary force raided multiple offices of his close aide and business partner Anwar Majid. TV channels reported that five people were detained and weapons recovered during the raids.
Slamming his critics upon his arrival, Zardari said that those who had accused him of escaping the country should know that “we may occasionally leave the country but will be buried in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, the ancestral hometown of Bhuttos”.
According to sources, the announcement of Zardari’s return to the country was made after he spoke to the new army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa.
In what appeared to be an attempt to please the military leadership, the former president said in his brief address to party supporters outside the Karachi airport that Pakistani flag has become the symbol of freedom for Kashmiris. “Kashmir will become part of Pakistan,” he remarked.
