Where is Tariq Qarra and Muzzafar Beig?

SRINAGAR: While the cracks within the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are visible both in and outside the Legislative assembly, the party President and J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti seems to have sidelined the two greats of PDP-Tariq Hameed Qarra and Muzzafar Hussian Beig.

Ever since Mehbooba re-stitched the alliance with BJP after her father and ex-chief minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed’s demise, Qarra and Beig are totally off the scene.

“There is not even a single word about them. Even both are MPs but neither they show their presence in the parliament nor in the state politics,” says Muhammad Fareed, a political observer, adding, it seems the problem is very deep.

It wouldn’t be wrong to say that both Beig and Qarra were the right and left hand of late Mufti Muhammad Sayeed and until last year were considered the main faces of the PDP. But as more and more young faces are making entry into the party, the age old soldiers have been silently sidelined.

However, during the course of deliberations when Mehbooba Mufti was in the process of realigning with the BJP, both Beig and Qarra appeared in some meetings of PDP, but soon after the government was formed both the top leaders have gone off the scene.

Party insiders say that Beig and Qarra are not happy as they had proposed Mehbooba to drop some faces from the cabinet and include others, but when that didn’t happen, both the senior leaders preferred to stay away sensing their voices have become voiceless in PDP after the rise of people like Haseeb A Drabu, Nayeem Akhtar and others.

There are also reports that the Altaf Bukhari led faction of PDP is enjoying full support from Beig and Qarra on some issues.

The cracks within the PDP are widening with every passing day and its glimpse was seen when on the last day of the assembly session senior PDP leader and former minister Javed Mustafa Mir tried to corner Mehbooba Mufti over the suicide attempt issue of a bureaucrat, but Mehbooba hinted at the Speaker to call of the session leaving Mir, who is a three time MLA red faced. Mir then pushed the chair and table he was sitting on to give vent to his anger. (PTK)
