Gunman Attack Police Van During Stone Pelting

SRINAGAR: A gunman on Friday allegedly resorted to indiscriminate firing at a police vehicle during stone pelting at apple township of Sopore in north Kashmir district of Baramulla this afternoon.

Official sources said people, mostly youths took to the streets at main chowk Sopore this afternoon after Friday prayers, raising “pro-freedom” slogans and pelting stones on security forces.

“When a police bullet proof vehicle was chasing away the stone pelters, a gunman suddenly appeared from the narrow lane and resorted to firing with automatic weapons, “sources said.

However, no one was injured in the firing, they said, adding the stone pelters were later chased away. Security forces conducted searches in the area briefly but the gunmen had escaped.

Meanwhile, eighteen policemen including two officers were injured in Kupwara town after an irate mob attacked a police post with stones.

“Eighteen policemen including the station house officer (SHO) of Kupwara police station and an assistant sub-inspector were injured when an unruly mob resorted to he avy stone pelting at the police post in Kupwara town after the Friday prayers,” a senior police officer said here.

“The incident happened after a separatist leader made an inflammatory speech at the local mosque,” he said, adding police exercised utmost restraint to ensure that no civilian casualty occurs.

“Some of the injured policemen have sustained serious injuries and have been shifted to hospital for treatment.”

Stone-pelting incidents have also occurred in the volatile town of Sopore in Baramulla after the Friday prayers.
