SKIMS faculty ’embarrasses’ Govt by refusing to meet Director

Srinagar: In a major embarrassment for the state government, the medicos at the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Soura here on Saturday “boycotted” meeting with director SKIMS, Dr Mandeep K Bhandari, who is Secretary Health & Medical Education Department, presently holding additional charge of the hospital.
Bhandari, who visited the hospital to take stock of the hospital had called a meeting with the medicos. But the SKIMS Faculty Forum stayed away from the meeting pleading that “under norms a non-medico cannot be Director SKIMS.”
Talking to Kashmir Observer, the SKIMS Faculty Forum said: “We don’t want to use the word boycott but yes we stayed away from the meeting because attending it would mean that we endorse his being director, something which is illegal, illogical.”
“We are not getting into bureaucracy Vs technocracy, but cannot technically endorse his(Bhandari’s appointment,” the SKIMS medico said.
Bhandari was recently given the additional charge of Director SKIMS when the post fell vacant with the retirement of  Dr Showkat Zargar on June 2.
Meanwhile SKIMS spokesperson, in a handout said Bhandari “took stock of the situation of the functioning and ongoing works at SKIMS.” “The introductory/ review meeting was convened to review the functioning of various departments of SKIMS. He took review of the various departments and deliberated upon the various issues. He directed the officers of administration and other departments to take the work of hospital work with missionary zeal. He also reviewed the patient care facilities in the hospital,” the handout said.
“The Director SKIMS was accompanied by Hafeez Ullah Shah, Addl Director & EOSSG, Dr Altaf Kirmani, Dean Medical Faculty, Dr Farooq A Jan, Medical Superintendent, Er Muhammad Sultan Najar, Chief Engineer and other members of administration and faculty,” the handout added.
