SRINAGAR: Mizraab, an initiative by the young students of Kashmir University, was Friday formally launched at a simple but impressive function. The event was held at Gulshan Book Store cum Café recently opened at Nehru Park.
Large number of students, intellectuals and members of civil society were present.
Mizraab, first and the only journal in Kashmir, exclusively managed by students of the Valley’s premier educational institution, the Kashmir University, is powered by Kashmir Observer.
According to the editor, Saba Nazki, Mizraab is aimed at stimulating collective minds to produce thought that will redefine the relationship between literature, arts and culture”.
Mizraab, meaning a plectrum that strikes strings of the musical instrument Rabaab,will be a fortnightly tabloid shaped journal featuring arts and culture.
Gulshan Books, Blitz, Funkar International and Sajid Iqbal Foundation sponsored todays event.
The event was moderated by journalist Gowher Geelani, who spoke about Mizraab-How it came into being and what it aims at.
This was followed by a brief introduction by the Mizraab Editor.
One of the highlights of the event was the address by noted satirist Zareef Ahmad Zareef.
Zareef in his inimitable manner, stressed the importance of preserving Kashmiri culture and also appreciated the Mizraab team’s efforts of trying to provide a platform to the youth to showcase their talent and give voice to their thoughts.
Zareef also dwelt on young people’s responsibilities to society and hoped that Mizraabs team would demonstrate resolve in making the initiative successful.
Wajahat Qazi, Associate Editor of the Kashmir Observer conveyed his organisations good wishes and support for Mizraab team. He said KO’s support to Mizraab team was premised upon the papers deep seated belief that the educated youth cohort of Kashmir need intellectual and emotional efflorescence. He said the Kashmir Observer hopes to make this appreciable initiative by the young minds, a success.
Writer Zahid Ghulam Muhammad (ZGM) who also spoke at the event encouraged the students and appreciated their sincere efforts.
US based Kashmiri activist, Asmat Ashai and CEO Gulshan Books, Sheikh Ajaz, also spoke at the occasion.
The event was then capped by a musical soiree where the vale’s budding musicians and singers demonstrated their talent.
The audience was left mesmerised by a budding musician Ali Saiffudin, who sang the famous Kashmiri folk song Bisht Bisht Briareu followed by a series of other folk songs in a style that synthesized the traditional and the modern.
Similarly, popular Kashmiri singer Mehmeet Syed and her team enthralled the audience with a number of Sufi and Kashmiri folk songs.
The event ended on a positive note and energy with the student pioneers of Mizraab thanking the audience, Kashmir Observer, all other sponsors and guests seeking their good wishes and support.
