Contradictory statements on killing of Army’s porter

Kupwara: Breaking its silence over the killing of porter in North Kashmir’s Handwara town, Army Thursday claimed that its porter Liyakat Ali Joo was killed when militants suddenly fired upon a search party in Watsar Forest.
This is contrary to what a senior police officer had yesterday said. “liakat was kidnapped Tuesday night from Watsar village where he had gone to meet his sister,” a local news agency quoted the official yesterday.
Police has launched a probe to investigate the ‘murder’, officer added.
The reports that the porter was killed by unknown gunmen were refuted by the family members of the deceased porter.
“I can tell you with authority that Army has killed my husband. My husband was working for 21 RR as porter and I know it well that he has been killed by army and not by militants,” the porter’s wife claimed.
“A column of security forces came under fire which was immediately retaliated during a search operation in the Handwara forests,” reads a press statement of the Army. “After a brief exchange of fire, the area was searched during which Liaqat Ali was found injured. After administrating immediate first aid, the individual was evacuated by foot to the Handwara-Bunawadar road head but he had unfortunately succumbed to the injuries.”
“His body was handed over to police at 6:30 AM,” the statement added.
“Since the deceased was working with the Army, we are committed to provide all possible assistance including authorized entitlements to his family,” Army said.
