Assembly Pays Homage to Late Mufti, other departed Lawmakers

Srinagar: – The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative assembly on Thursday paid  rich tributes former Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and five others who passed away during the intervening period of the autumn session-2015 and budget session-2016 of the state legislature.

Apart from Mufti, those who died include former ministers Choudhary Lal Mohammad Sabir, Mohammad Khalil Jawahar, Dr Romesh Chander Sharma and lawmakers Sehdev Singh and Mohammad Maqbool Mohjoo.

Speaking on the obituary reference, Speaker Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Mr Kavinder Gupta said Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was a great politician, a true democrat and an acknowledged statesman who was acquainted with the art of adapting politics according to the needs and circumstances.  

“Mufti Sahab was a sagacious politician and a visionary leader who throughout his political career strived hard for nourishment of secular and democratic values,” Mr Gupta said and added that Mufti Sahab was a man of principles who never hesitated to show dissent even at the cost of high positions.

Paying rich tributes to former Chief Minister, Late Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Nirmal Singh said, “The capabilities of Mufti sahib were recognized at national level also due to which he rose to key positions during his political career,” he said. 

“His integrity, uprightness and political understanding made him a great visionary leader,” he said.

Dr Singh said that Mufti contributed a lot into the state politics at all levels.

“PDP-BJP forged an alliance which was impossible ideologically but Mufti sahib proved that times have changed and all the parties should work for the development of the State and the country,” he said. He said the alliance parties and opposition should follow the path laid down by the late Chief Minister.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and R&B, Mr Abdul Rehman Veeri said that “leaders like Mufti Sahib aren’t born overnight.”

“Mufti sahib was an institution and he was never bothered about chair and power. He always believed in integrity, honesty and upright politics,” Veeri said.

Veeri said that he has grown under Mufti’s patronage. “I have all along remained under the patronage of this great leader, who is being remembered by all the parties today,” he said. 

Speaking on the obituary reference CPI (M) Legislator M Y Taragami said, “Mufti Sahab With his gentle, soft-spoken and simple life, he was an example to all and earned the state’s love and respect.

The house also pays tributes to former governor Lt Gen K V Krishna Rao who was responsible for the 1996 elections that led to the return of Dr Farooq Abdullah in power.

Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti, skips the obituary reference of her father late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

“Mehabooba ji should have here in the house to attended obituary reference putting all her engagements aside Late Mufti was not only CM but father of the current CM,” Rashid said.
